  2. Canada became a country in 1867. Each year on 1º July, Canada Day celebrates the events that occurred on 1 July 1867

Canada never "declared our independence" through a violent war or revolution, but rather took over more and more powers slowly through negotiation.  The "British North America Act" took effect on July 1st, 1867 by the British Parliament and it was this Act that created "Canada" as, effectively, entirely independent.

    The symbolic British Queen is still honored on Canadian currency, gets dicounts on air travel (yes, this is true) and is mentioned in some formal government proceedings.
