The inaugural US Open was played on 4th October, 1895, on a nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club, Rhode Island. The 36-hole competition took place in a single day, and attracted ten professionals as well as an amateur. The eventual winner was Englishman Horace Rawlins, who won $150 plus a gold medal worth $50.
