In windows vista, Windows Media Player and Quicktime .AVI won't play video, all codecs updated. Why?

In windows vista I have AVI files that won't play. I mean the audio plays and only one will play video which is strange. All the media codecs are updated and its the same with Quicktime and Windows Media Player. I sent the files to another computer and they play fine, both audio and video so I know the files aren't corrupted. It's something with the computer I know that.

Any ideas?

  1. Download VLC media player, it worked great for me.

  2. do you have the xvid codec from http://www.xvid.org ?  They work for .avi files.

  3. Try using G-Divx Zenith player or Gom. Don't let them connect to the internet when the firewall asks unless you have usage rights.

    http://www.gdivx.com/

    http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.h...

Codecs are included and both are free and work fine for me.

  4. I`ve had this problem before in vista, sometimes it`s the way that they are encoded. I`m pretty sure I just installed an XviD codec and everything worked fine. I found the K-Lite codec pack wasn`t very good for my computer. Also, you could try the DivX codec.
