In world Geography I am learning about longitude and latitude. Can you have negative longitude?

We don't say negative in class but, just north and south.

  1. No. Going either east or west from the prime meridian you start measuring in that direction.


  2. You most certainly can have negative longitude. There are two broad ways to show longitude for east-west directions. Either one can use positive number with E and W to show the direction, or one can use positive numbers for east and negative numbers for west. For example, the longitude of New York city is either 71º West or -71º. Similarly, for latitude, one can write N or S after the degrees or use positive or negative numbers, respectively.

    Of course, it's also possible to use either decimals or degrees/minutes/seconds, but that doesn't affect the answer that YES you can have negative numbers for longitude and latitude.

  3. No, Because the earth is not flat. So the number cannot be called negative. Even it's flat it still not negative.

    There is no such thing.
