Question:

In your experience, what do groundhogs like to eat?

I put some carrots and lettuce in the Havahart trap for now. I have smoke bombed one hole, but there does not seem to be another hole that the smoke comes out.

I just want to catch "His Holiness", before he eats me out of house and home!

  1. Good luck with the trap...graoundhogs are very smart..and won't usually go into something like that.  We usually have to shoot them (unfortunately, but we depend on our garden to feed us through the winter too...)We have used the smoke bombs...if you look around you should find another hole...they never have just one(it is for their own safety..) Make sure you fill the hole in after the bomb has been burning for a few minutes..thta way the smoke can't come back out.  (Also make sure you don't use one during a draught..good way to start a fire..)

AS far as what they like to eat..anyting that they shouldn't...beans , carrots, peas, lettuce, beets,...i have seen one wipe out a whole row of carrost in a matter of hours...

  2. You'll never catch the little bugger in a trap.

  3. Try a nice ripe tomato, or maybe even half an apple.  Whistle pigs seem to loooove tomatoes.  They'll waltz thru a garden and take a bite out of every tomato so it seems like it would be a good attractant for chuck.

Drape a dark cloth over the trap too, so it looks less like a trap to the hungry fella.

  4. They will eat everything in your garden, but nothing in the trap.

Try to disguise it with branches, etc . Good luck.
