I wasn't alive in 1986, so I'm gonna have to say the final game of the 2003 ALCS.

31 ANSWERS

  1. Game 3 Dallas vs Heat, in the NBA Finals. The refs start cheating and calling fouls for Dwayne Wade and give the game to the Heat. Dallas was screwed by the refs and the rest of the series. So painful.

  2. No. 1: The last four games of the 2004 ALCS. Just awful. I still remember sitting on the floor of my apartment, listening to the last three outs on the radio with my TV off because I never wanted to see the Red Sox celebrate an ALCS win at Yankee Stadium. I couldn't do it. Hearing the celebration and John Sterling's voice sounding so stoic still makes me sick. The next day at work, it was dark, gloomy, cold and gray outside. Summed up my mood to a tee. I was not a pleasant person to talk to for a few days. Even my Mets fan friend who hates the Yankees knew not to talk to me for a while. The total opposite of what I had experienced a year before.

No. 2: Game 5 of the '95 ALDS. It was my No. 1 most painful for a LONG time. And I still hate Edgar Martinez to this day for that. To think if Don Mattingly had stayed one more year, he might have a ring on his finger.

No. 3: Game 7, 2001 World Series. That d**n bloop single by Luis Gonzalez. Ruined the 4-peat! A great series that ended horribly for Yankees fans. Now I kinda know how Yankees fans of the past felt about Bill Mazeroski's home run in the '60 World Series.

  3. It Was Games. The 2004 ALCS, The Yankees Look Like A Tour De Force, And They Blew, It, But They Blew It To The Red Sox, So Im Not All Upset, Greta You Guys Have One Great Team.

  4. 1999 NLCS Game 6 against the Braves

The Mets were losing 5-0 after the first inning and made a great comeback to tie it at 7-7 after 7 innings and actually

took the lead a couple times in the game.

Watching Kenny Rogers walk in Andruw Jones to end the game and the season was brutal.

Either that game or Game 7 of the NLCS in 2006.

Seeing Carlos Beltran strike out looking with the bases loaded sucked.  It especially sucked because I was there in person.

  5. It will probably be the game tonight when the Pirates play the Astros

My most painful game changes every series while watching the Buccos.

  6. Well my most painful was definitely your most joyous. Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS was sickening. From game 4 on, that series just got uglier and uglier. But there was always a hope, a next game. I kept thinking to myself "this is the Red Sox and Yankees, the Yanks have to come out on top." Then game 7 came and Damon's grand slam! That game was over in the first few innings.

  7. I was alive in 1986 (12 yrs old) and Game 6 brought in a guy who I had a catch with as the ball boy for the Sox in '84; Bob "Steamer" Stanley.  I was excited and believed that this was it.  Then I watched him throw a wild pitch to tie the game.  Then came the roller to first, then the tears.  That's the only game I ever cried over (being 12 and all).  Pedro into the 8th in '03 was painful, but 1 strike from winning the series crushed me.

  8. I didn't see it live, but the most painful game I can think of has to be August 18,1967.  That was when Tony Conigliaro was hit by Jack Hamilton's fastball.  I was new to the Red Sox then but was very excited at their prospects that year and was crushed when the injury happened.  The event haunted me for years.

Here you had a great young player, entering what should have been the prime of his career, have his talent, ability and career cut short.  He had permanent double vision after the event but tried for years after to reestablish his place, managing to put together a good season or two.  I can recall that he even tried to comeback as a pitcher.

I was reminded of the event when I read Yaz's book (called Yaz)  which was really just a chronicle of the Impossible Dream season.  Of course, at that time, he did not know the magnitude of the injury as he speculated how strong the team would be in the coming seasons.

To this day I am very sensitive on the topic  and take the hard line when people talk so lightly about bean balling. The oft repeated questions like "Can you tell me where I can see the best bean ball incidents?  They are hilarious."  strikes a nerve.  Pitching inside?  Yeah, that's part of the game.  Hit by pitch? Ditto.  Head hunting?  There is no room for that .

Sorry to get so serious .

  9. I'm a Met fan and their was a game that the Mets were winning by like 7 or 8 runs against the Braves and they ended up losing that game because of  8 run inning by the Braves.  The good part was I slept through most the game.  I went to sleep and they were winning by a lot, then I wake up and I here they blew the lead.  That's the last time I sleep through a Met game.

  10. What do you mean 86...that was an awsome year come on, even though i was 2 and didnt know what the h**l was going on.  For me it would of had to been when we lost game 7 of the NLCS after Endy Chavez made one of the best catches ever to rob a homer.  I really thought this was it and we are gonna win but it didnt turn out that way =(.  What made it even worse was that the cardinals killed the tigers and the cardinals had were only 5 games above .500.

  11. I have a list of tons of games, but yesterday was pretty bad for the A's. They had a runner on first base and only one out against Mariano Rivera and a lazy fly ball is hit to medium deep right field and Bobby Abreu drops the ball, but the runner had already gone back to first base and wasn't paying attention to the actual play and ended up be forced out on a close play at second. There was no reason for him to be out at second if he actually done what most runners do and wait and watch to see if the ball is caught he would have been safe at second and who knows what would have happened the A's could have tied the game or scored the winning run. That was painful yesterday.

Also Jeremy Giambi not sliding on the play with Jeter. I still think that Giambi was safe but it would have been better if he slid or jumped over the tag beause Posada didn't have the time to catch the ball and block the plate.

The non interference call on Miguel Tejada that should have been called. Where he stopped because of the contact with Bill Mueller at third base and Tejada was easily thrown out at home.

  12. For me, it was October 2, 1978.  That was just horrible to see Bucky "swearword" Dent hit that darn homerun and then to have Yaz pop out to third for the final out of the game. I think I cried for Yaz more than anyone else.  Of course the other ones you mentioned pretty much stunk too..lol..The WS championship in 2004 pretty much erased any of the old hurt though and it really doesnt sting any more.  The 2007 WS Championship was pretty nice too!!

  13. The A's last week. When Duchscherer pitched a great game and the A's were winning by one to the Angels, their closer (Huston Street) comes in and blows it! They lost. Second, Saturday. Gallagher also pitched a great game and they were winning (A's) by one against the Yankees and then their closer comes in and blows it again and they lose in the 12th inning. The bases were loaded and the pitcher hit the guy with a pitch and the Yankees won. I was so sad. Great Question. Here's a star! =]

  14. Game 7 2006 NLCS, watching Molina get that home-run off of Heilman and Beltran striking out to Wainwright.  Very painfull indeed since we were clearly the best team that year and would of won the world series if we got there.

The collapse of last year was bad too, but we weren't the best team last year and it a combination of horrible slumps.

The Mets have a way of breaking your heart at the worse times.

    Life long Mets fan.

  15. In baseball:

    1986 World Series, Game 6

1987 NLCS, Game 6 (How could Maldonado not see that ball coming at him??)

    2002 World Series, Game 6

2003 ALCS, Game 7 (How in the world was Pedro still in there when his arm started to give out?)

    In basketball:

    2007 Warriors-Jazz, Game 4

    In football:

1983 season Washington Redskins had scored 541 points in the regular season and we lost 38 - 9 to the Raiders in the SB, what more needs to be said ..

    In hockey:

2002 Canadiens vs Hurricanes, Game 4 (Habs were up 2-1 in the series and 3-0 at one point in the game)

  16. Game 7 of the 1982 world series. Being a Brewer fan and it being their one and only world series appearance, it was disappointing to see them lose game 7. To this day it still makes me sick to think that they were one game away from winning it.

  17. it was utterly embarrass  to watch the 04 America League final, when the 3-0 Yankee were beaten by the d**n Red Sox.

  18. Well, I would like to say Game 3 of the ALDS in 2000 where the WHite Sox lost to the Mariners. But I didn't watch it then, because I was young, but I checked the score and that was bad.

Well, I would have to say September 30 of last year. It was the last game of the season and as you know, the Sox did terrible. We always go to the last game and this game summed up the season. The relief pitching stunk. The Sox lost the game 13-3 against the Tigers and there weren't many positive moments besides a home run by Josh Fields. ANd I was next to some Tigers fans!

  19. My son and I were at game 6, 2004  ALCS, Yankee Stadium.  Curt Schilling and his "bloody sock", throwing batting practice speed the entire game and no one could hit the ball.  The Yankees were up 3-0 in the series and blew it!  As we left the Stadium after the game I told my son that the Yankees looked like a beaten team.  The rest is history.

  20. Final Game of 2004 ALCS....your favorite probably....i just stared at the TV the whole time in complete disbelief....i really just thought i was having an awful nightmare for a full two or three days i thought that....crazy!

  21. Baseball-Last year in the ALDS. My Angels were down 2-0 to the Sox and we just got blown out at home and lost the series.

Basketball-2003 Western Conference Semifinals Game 6 the end of a dynasty of the Lakers

Football-Super Bowl 37 my Raiders got blown out 48-21

  22. Definitely Game 7 of the NLCS!

The Mets were playing too good to lose!

Chavez robbed a homer, Wright (Single/RBI), Chavez (Single), Valentin (Single)!

They were awesome until Molina hit the 2 run bomb off of Heilman.  Then Beltran Struck out with the bases loaded 2 outs in the 9th!  Which made the Mets lose the pennant!

  23. 2000 when the Mets lost in the world series

2006 when they lost agt the cardnals I cried all night it was horrible

2007 the worse collapse in mlb hiistory

When Glavin went to Atl n didnt come back to the Mets

  24. Game 6, 2002 World Series

    Game 5, 2003 NLDS

Cal vs. Oregon State '07 (CFB)

    Cal vs Stanford '07 (CFB)

  25. Game 7 of the 1988 NLCS ---

When the Mets lost to the Dodgers. Had they won, they would've been World Champions.

    Game 7 of 2006 NLCS....

..again, had the Mets won, they would've been World Champions.

  26. siigh the whole darn post season series against boston last yr..

i mean i'm a calm and collected person but that series.. hehe sorry greta but i was throwing water bottles at the tv hoping it would reach beckett's head so the angels could face someone else

    frustration to the max!!

    oh yeah honorable mention:

Angels vs ChiSox ALCS 2005!! gooosh it was bad.. i mean so many controversial plays seriously!

  27. I'm going to flip a coin between

1984 Cubs v Padres game 5 - Durham ball thru the legs & the bad hop of a Tony Gwynn hit that went over Ryno's glove

    and the

2003 Bartman Game - i'm not blaming Bartman but Gonzo is the real Goat

  28. Game seven, 2001 World Series.

Given the events going on in the city at the time, and the way they played their hearts out in that series, it was terrible that the Yankees couldn't pull it out and win.

  29. Game 7, 2006 NLCS - Molina's homer in the 9th, then Beltran watching the last pitch of the season go by, with the bat on his shoulder.

The final game of the 2007 regular season was also pretty bad, Glavine lasting all of about five minutes in that game to finish "The Collapse."

I also found it pretty painful to watch Game Six of the 1999 NLCS, with the season ending on a bases-loaded walk from Kenny Rogers.

Wow, those Mets find some pretty horrendous ways to end seasons, huh?

  30. Oct.14,2003 NLCS. Cubs and Marlins. Cubs had a 3-0 lead with 5 outs to go and gave up 8 runs in the 8th inning eventually losing 8-3.

  31. I was alive in 1986, of sufficient years to have full knowledge of what I was witnessing, and yes, I was watching. 25-October. World Series Game 6.

At the time, 68 years. That close. Four different pitches that, had any one been a strike, would have ended it. THAT CLOSE! The wild pitch. The grounder. sigh.

I am so glad still to have been around and interested in 2004.
