In your opinion, do some Red Sox fans seem to forget...?

...That Johnny Damon was a MAJOR part of the 2004 WS team?

I see SO many Red Sox fans calling him a "traitor" or a "sellout." I mean, don't get me wrong, I liked Damon a lot and it really didn't make me too happy to see him in pinstriples BUT I didn't forget what he'd done for the Red Sox.

This isn't meant to be "ranting" or "chatting"...it's an honest question. Why are some Red Sox fans so hateful towards Johnny Damon? Is there no appreciation for his contributions in ending an 86 year WS drought? Or is it just the fact that he went to the Yankees?

Feel free to share any comments/opinions you want.

  1. I used to Defened Jeff Kent when he became a Dodger, becuse He won an MVP with the Giants and he Helped us to the '02 World Series

    But now

he Is a Jerk, he hates the Bay Area, KNBR, and Giants Fans

    sooooo, I hate him

But I get what you are saying

    PS: Nice Avatar

  2. They do. My best friend is a huge Red Sox fan...he cant stand Damon. He still LOVES Pedro and Nomar, and Manny. But the mention of Johnny Damon actually upsets him.  He hates (strongly dislikes? :-p) anything to do with the Yankees, so Damon is gone in his eyes.

If you think about it, the same types of fans forget they even won the World Series, except when it's convenient for them when declaring how much better their team is than yours. But if they're team isn't in position to win, they're down and angry at the team, players, coaches...everybody. Those fans just don't have respect for the game itself, and their fandom is based more on being able to brag that they cheer for the 'best team in baseball'

  3. Baseball unfortunately is a business and player go to who ever will pay them the most.  The have no real loyalty to one team like they did before.  You have very few player that play their whole career with one team.  Notice  I said few.  there are some players who will spend their entire career with one team.  Alot of "GOOD" baseball fans will cheer a star when he returns.  I have seen it many times in St. Louis.  I know some other cities do it as well.  Its just the East coast mentality.  I don;t care what you did when you played for us.  You now play for the opposition so I will boo you when you are announced or come to bat.

  4. Oh, yeah they do!

Believe me, I've lived in New England all my life, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and they really despised him when he left.

Being a yankees fan, I remember that he hit that grand slam in game 7 of the 2004 ALCS and sent the Red Sox to the World Series.

I still get Post- Traumatic stress over that.

  5. Your right I always loved Damon because he was a Great player fast and everything he has a power swing when he bombs it lol I sound stupid right now.But hes a great player Same with Manny  too don't forget what he did

  6. I think it's just because he plays for the enemy now.

  7. glad he went to da yankees

    yankees 4life

  8. he's just a hypocrite. He had a chance to resign with the sox but lacking any team spirit he decided to play for the yanks for a few extra bucks...Yea,we appreciate him helping the team get that championship but so did Ramirez(WS MVP).

  9. I don't they are forgetting the past, but they are focusing on the present.  And in all honesty, leaving a team to go straight to the enemy defines a traitor.  As a yankee fan though, I can't complain.

However, one thing sox fans do seem to forget is that it isn't the yankees who are "buying championships".  In '07 they had maybe 3 guys straight from their farm system.

  10. Just like how White Sox fans forgot Uribe was a major part of the 2005 WS team. Many fans say to get rid of him, that he's the worst player ever, but they forget how clutch he was in the playoffs in 2005. One season, and everyone forgets who you were.

  11. It all stems from the Babe going to the Yankees and creating this huge Boston-New York rivalry.  Many of us Beantowners consider it akin to someone defecting and going to the enemy.  In all honesty, he's not a bad guy and obviously was a big part of the end of the drought.  But going to the Yankees right after a World Series win?  That's just selling out for money - which of course almost all players do nowadays.  So while I'm appreciative of what he did in Boston, him heading to the Yankees really erases a lot of it for me.  I'd guess a lot of people feel the same way I do, about him as well as Roger Clemens (even pre-steroid talk).  Baseball is that important in Boston.

  12. Yeah I don't understand why some Sox fans don't like him...I mean I didn't appreciate how he couldn't keep his mouth shut regarding the Red Sox when he first went to the Yankees but I just attributed that to him probably still wanting to play for the Red Sox...I never have and never will hate him though because without him the 2004 season never would have happened...and that was just a magical run to the Championship.

  13. Damon was a player who I always liked. I still wish the A's would've kept him. I do think that some Red Sox fans need to stop hating him just because he went to the Yankees. The Red Sox just wouldn't give him the amount of money he wanted so he went somewhere else. More power to him. He got what he wanted and hating him is not going to do anything for anyone. There are just some fans out there who aren't as down to earth as you are. Most fans (and this is meaning fans of all teams) seem to start bashing a player as soon as that player leaves.

  14. He was a major part in the Red Sox beating my team, Yankees in the play offs & them winning the WS & I don't know if they would have won without him or not. I think the fans say that because he went to the Yankees & if he would have gone to another team, I don't think the fans would be saying the things about him as they have been

  15. The problem is, they don't forget, and no one wants to see one of "their" guys go to any division rival.

  16. It's because he went to the yankees, because otherwise they are ignorant for hating such a great player that once helped them.
