In your opinion, what are the best video games of all time?

I'm hoping to get into the video game industry as a career, so I'd like to make sure I'm familiar with the best games, both classic and new, on any platform. Please give me the names of the best video games of all time, or the ones I should be familiar with, and tell me what makes them so great.

Super Smash Bros. -both Melee and Brawl;

The Final Fantasy series have also been really successful (VII the best!), with only a couple being kinda boring and repetitive...

pacman because it was not a space invaders clone  in 1980

super mario bros  for  turning a  almost dead industry around  and introducing a whole new world and play mechanism  to the gamers

the legend of zelda  for including free roaming  and rpg elements

metroid  : for doing that all over again and the first female  protagonist

sim city   for the firts time you can really build a  city  not destroy it

civilisation taking the ideas of  sim city and mule to new heights  

the sims  for  making games more personal   and more succesfull then ever  and  special mention of  2  who  has made even deeper strides  to making it more realistic  

dune II  and herzog zwei for being the first  rts games  al the others are just  refinements  

and so forth
