Which guitarist is an unsung hero & doesn't get the recognition he/she deserves?

Brian May of Queen

Just look at the tabs of his work and you will understand.  The man uses nothing but bends, hammer ons and pull offs, and very rarely do you just see plain strings being hit.

He built his guitar from scratch with his father, and he was a revolutionary guitar player for the best band of the 80s

In rock, Richard Thompson.  If he received the credit he truly deserves, in every poll on "best guitarist" he'd be eight of the top ten, he's THAT good.

In country, Merle Travis.  Chet Atkins started as a drummer but wanted to play like Merle.  Although he ended up playing like Chet, which was pretty good, he couldn't hold a candle to Travis.

I was all set to start ranting about Jeff Beck, but then I read Lady Trons response ( man she's smart ) and would have to agree with her on the Rory Gallagher, but Jeff Beck is definitely the second most under rated guitarist.

Joe Walsh: he recorded some of the most recognizable tracks of the 70s, while playing with the James Gang, the Eagles, and solo, but is never really recognized. Aside from playing on some of rock's most recognizable tracks, he taught Peter Frampton how to use the talk box.
