Basically, Kevin Rudd used the word 'Sorry', whilst Howard did not. How important is the word sorry really? Other than that, their speeches pretty much went along the same lines? Do you agree?

  1. Though i think Kevin Rudd's speech was better i don't believe that there was really a point in saying sorry, what happened has happened and it was none of us that did it.

  2. Howard did actually use the word sorry, it was considered that he didn't because it was not used in the context of a direct apology. ie 'I'm sorry that you feel that way' kind of thing.

While Rudd did use the word 'sorry' in the context of a direct apology. While it may appear that Krudd has actually made an apology to the indigenous people of Australia, as he did not follow correct parliamentry proceedure, it was not actually an offical act of the Government of Australia, but rather an act of a Populist Prime Minister designed to increase his approval rating and nothing more.

As you will see if you look into Indigenous issues apart from making a lot of noise and bogus apology Krudd has done  nothing further to address issues such as health, housing, education, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, life expectancy and the many other issues he professed to address.

Howard on the other hand didn't make anymore of a song and dance about it than he had to, did not make general sweeping comments on behalf of the Australian Government (which being elected is representative of the Australian people) but was taking action in addressing issues facing indigenous people.

In my opinion Howard's apology was the better of the two as it was heart felt and succinct. Krudds speech was nothing more than a publicity stunt, which was badly thought out and executed, by a Prime Minister who would rather be a President, who has since made a rod for the back of the country.
