For me it would be the Dc-10 cargo door failing in 1972, the pilot landed the aircraft safely with little hydraulic control, to find he had a giant hole in the aircraft's cargo door. Then 2 years later the same thing happened on a Turkish Dc-10 flying from paris, the door failed and all the passangers and crew were killed.

  1. The Alaska MD-80 that crashed off Point mugu into the Pacific. In my opinion it is one of the most preventable and unnesseciary crashes.

  2. A Brazilian aviation disaster. Well, it wasn't a big accident, but... take a look:

Flight RG 254 took off from Marabá at 17.25h for the last leg of the Sao Paulo - Marabà - Bélem flight. By accident the pilot entered a 270 deg heading into the flight computer, instead of 027deg. At about 20.45h the aircraft had to make a forced landing in the jungle due to fuel exhaustion. The aircraft was located two days later.

Atention:FIVE IN THE AFTERNOON! The right route was to the North (027), so the pilot went to the wrong- West (270).

HE DID'N SEE THE SUN IN FRONT OF HIM!

This is a mistery we'll never know...

  3. I would say twa 800

  4. 9/11 impacted not only a country, but the whole world.

  5. The worst aviation disaster to date is the crash of two 747 aircraft in Tenerife in 1977. A Pan am 747 was hit by a KLM Dutch 747 in fog on the runway. 583 people died in the accident and to this day it is the worst single aviation crash in history. You could read about it on the Internet I'm sure and you will get the correct details. Most things I have read on it suggest the Dutch pilot was to blame because he was in a hurry to get home. Try typing Tenerife disaster in Wikipedia.

  6. 911

  7. The two 747s colliding in Tenerife

  8. Tenerife.  Two of the largest passenger planes, KLM and PanAm Boeing 747s, colliding.  Total loss of life = 583 people.  This accident has the highest number of fatalities for a single accident in aviation history.  A second and third runner up would be the American DC10 accident at O'Hare back in 1979 killing 273 and the Turkish DC10 accident in France back in 1974 killing 345.  The Turkish DC10 accident only left small fragments of the aircraft and its occupants because it slammed into the ground at over 430 knots (494 MPH).  Very terrifying.

  9. This is when two 747's collided on a runway at Tenerife.

This was in 1977, one was landing and the other crossed the runway. About 200 people died. Horrible.

  10. Japan Airlines Flight 123: a Boeing 747 on the route, JA8119, lost all hydraulic systems and its vertical stabilizer due to a structural failure on August 12, 1985. The resulting crash killed 520 of the 524 people on board

  11. Almost 3 years ago a Helios flight taking passengers from Cyprus to Greece crashed in Greece killing all passengers and crew.

  12. The WORST would be the day G.W Bush stepped aboard Air Force One. There hasn't been a worse disaster for the world before that time.

  13. Heathrow T5? BA Baggage handling?

  14. The destruction of the World Trade Center.

You have clarified that you meant accidental crash.  In that case it was the Tenerife collision, without a doubt.  Worst loss of life, and the most discussed among airline crews ever since.

The Japan Airlines flight 123 disaster ranks second.  Boeing crews often speculate on that one.

  15. yep 9/11
