The Declaration of Independence is the anchor of American democracy. The Constitution can be thrown out. The republic can be overthrown. But the Declaration is the very foundation of this country.

The United States of America was officially created when the Constitution was adopted in 1789, as that was the document which first formally identified our nation by that name. To those who say that 1776 would be our "birth year," that year actually gave birth to a confederation of colonies united against a single colonial power, but not to a nation with a centralized governing body. Prior to the Constitution being ratified, our nation was little more than a confederation of states that agreed to a common defense and little else.

when the people started thinking of themselves as a community apart from being british. from then on it was just a matter of time.
