  1. Umm the question is'nt quite clear. Would ahve been better to elabourate.

Shortboards are great for big surf. But then again everyone has their own opinion n comfort on what a big wave is.

I'd say anywhere between 4ft+ is ideal for shortboards. Because you have more control.

1-3ft go with a mal. more stable, catch waves well before they break and easy relaxed ride.

Also contemplate a "Fish" they are fun when in 2 or 3ft of surf.

  2. Unless you already surf, I would be surprised if the camp doesn't supply a board. Preferably a softtop (for your safety as a learner, and for their safety from liability in the event you get banged up and sue them).

There are good things about both long and short boards. I ride both (one at a time , of course). In the mid sixties, like almost everybody else, I started on a longboard. I went shorter and shorter every summer, during the 'short board revolution.' After getting out of the service, I had afew years of sporadic surfing, before I got back to surfing as much as possibly could. (I've driven 650 miles to go surfing!). I found some days that were just too small anything but a longboard. Just riding one size board is very limiting, conditions change daily in most places.

You need a board that will float you well enough for you to take off (paddle and catch a wave). Most people learn best on long boards, although I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board and master it. Long boards are ideal for learners. There are also good internediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals and some hybrids. You can always trade in a board and buy a new one when you are ready for a change (or keep your long board. I bought a new long board about 6/7 years ago, and, like I said, there are some days that it's the perfect board for the conditions).

There are no RULES for learning how to surf.

Longboarding has made a resurgence in the last ten/fifteen years. You can ride a longboard on any size wave, the same as you can ride a short board on any size wave (except for the REAL big stuff, where you would ride board known as a 'gun' or 'big gun'

Good luck in surf camp, be sure to learn etiquette and courtesy as well as technique. Once you start to surf, you will have a source of fun for life.

  3. short boards are better for catching big waves because they're more responsive and you get more speed. have you ever been surfing be4? if you havn't yu might want to start on a long board becasue they are easier to control!

  4. getting a great wave on a short board is a lot more satisfying, but also a lot harder. getting good at shortboarding requires more effort and energy.

its usually easier to learn on a longboard, or at least a longer shortboard.
