CN Rail is a privately owned railroad that is controlled by a Board of Directors who have reduced the workforce in order to increase profits. CN used to be a Canadian Crown Corporation Company and has since been taken over by E. Hunter Harrison and his Illinois Central Railway. While the name Canadian National must remain in order to satisfy legislative requirements, the majority of the Board are citizens of the United States. CN once employed over 125,000 people for just it's Canadian operations, while it now has just over 24,000 employees for it's entire North American Network.

  1. No.

  2. well in my point of view i think they could have more light,s up at some of the crossings,,i live in a small town,,and there are still a lot of crossings here that do not have any kind of a warning sign or nothing up,,i think they could do better.

  3. All common carriers have reduced their work force to the bare minimum.  Train and engine crews spend a great deal of time walking around in a semi-catatonic state, as the inability "lay off", for a day off, is difficult at best, and, in some cases, can result in disciplinary measures.

Fatigued crewmen in any mode of transportation is an accident waiting to happen.

So, in my point of view, none are running a safe railroad.

  4. Of course not, look at the fools running it

  5. asfas

  6. I do not think any railroad is running safely at some point.  I know a lot of engineers and conductors and unless they have a yard job and a set schedule they do not hardly get any sleep because they are always on call.  All railroads are cutting jobs that is why the crews do not get much sleep anymore.  I know in the clerical postions of the railroad they are cutting jobs left and right.  When I hired out in 1999 we had about 40 jobs in my area and now it is less then 20 people now.  That do not seem like a lot but it is when you are trying to keep your job and not get laid off for awhile like I did.
