I've always thought it meant it was supposed to be taken in a personal way.  And that I am the star performer in this stage of life that we are all part of.  For it is my life and no one else can live this life or perform for me.  No one else can take my role meant only for me.  If I am great in life it is only because of the supporting cast has made it so.

All of existance is a masquerade. Every being is either a prop or an actor in a monumental play. Each with facades that they put on to entertain the masses. Anything to please the audience, right?

The world is a stage. Very rarely does anyone show who they really are with no pretenses. We put up walls around ourselves, a stage so that we can preform and no one will bother to look past the act to what's really inside. We do this to avoid the risk of getting hurt. Trust is a big issue here.

I think that the it literally means what it says, we all act out our  parts of play. The thing to think about is: if it is true we are actors in a play, there must be a playwright. Someone who is controlling what we say, how we act, how those around us act.
