  1. Two events stand out in his long career as a jockey and trainer.

One was the loss of a son of Seattle Slew.  It broke down during a major stakes race.  Believe it's name was Slewpy (not sure...will look it up).

Got it! The horse was Swale.  Slewpy still a sire.

Seattle Slew breeding is known for high spirited animals, some of which want to do more than they are capable of.

On T.V., during and interview, Stephens said he always took the good with the bad, went home the same way after every race day.

The jockey Gary Stevens had a bone to pick with him over the race with the filly Winning Colors.

Stephens' charge was trying to muscle her in her quest to win the Preakness.  I believe the horse that gave her trouble was Forty Niner.

  2. he trained for 70 years...

he trained 11 eclipse award winners

    won Kentucky oaks....5 times

    won Kentucky derby ...2 times

    won Preakness.....1 time

and trained the winner of the Belmont, 5 times in a row.....

he was and will always be on of the best trainers ever!!!!!!!
