  1. The Golden Rule, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you', will work to help people work together exactly to the degree that everyone is alike.  If it were true that everyone wanted to have the exact same things in the exact same proportions and they all understood their own needs, it would be a fantastic rule.

But, sadly, people DON'T all want the same things.  And sometimes they want OPPOSITE things.

In such circumstances, giving them what you would want to be given is not a good rule at all and would actually serve to sow discord and hatred rather than order and brotherhood.  And despite some people's assertions, there are many religions and philosophies which realize this and don't espouse any version of the Golden Rule.

If you are looking to get along with people, you have to interact with them on the basis of what THEY want, not what YOU want.  Sometimes this will be the same, but certainly not always!

  2. The Golden Rule as a concept, is common to all the world's religions.  As such, it presents common ground that we can all start from in our quest for world peace.  We're all Homo Sapiens stuck on this oasis in space and we really need to learn to get along.
