Ina Teutenberg wins fourth stage in 2011 Giro D’ltalia Internazionale Femminile
HTC-Highroad team’s Ina Teutenberg won the bunch sprint of the fourth stage of 2011 Giro D’ltalia Internazionale Femminile on Monday, July 4. Marianne Vos maintained her overall leader’s jersey.
The 36-year-old Teutenberg took a total of 1 hour, 51 minutes and 50 seconds to cover the distance of 101 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Teutenberg said, “We had a couple roundabouts but the team did a good job from 3km leading out and keeping it fast, so there wasn't much position problems. The girls delivered me to 200m and I was able to hold off Bronzini for the last 200m."
Giorgia Bronzini of Colavita Forno d'Asolo was the runner-up and Monia Baccaille of SC MCipollini Giordana finished third.
Emma Johansson (Hitec Products – UCK), Annemiek Van Vleuten (Nederland Bloeit) and Martine Bras (Netherlands) were in fourth, fifth and sixth places, respectively.
At the start of the flat stage, the peloton cyclists working together with 37 kilometres to go, AA Drink Leontien.nl team’s Marijn De Vriese got away. The sprinter’s teams allowed her to build an advantage of only 15 seconds over the peloton.
However, in the final few kilometres HTC-Highroad team kept the race under control, but Baccialle was unable to maintain her pace. Teutenberg crossed the finish-line first ahead of other cyclists.
Ina further added, “The GC is pretty split up, Today we decided to go for the sprint for sure because it was a short stage to control. We didn't have 120km like tomorrow. The next days are a really big chance for a breakaway to stay to the finish."
Marianne Vos took the overall mountain classification ahead of Emma Pooley and Valentina Scandolara. Rasa Leleivyte took the title of Young rider classification ahead of Elena Berlato.
Marianne Vos took the overall standing with a time of 9 hours, 42 minutes and 36 seconds. Sylwia Kapusta was the runner-up with 8 seconds and Emma Pooley was in third place with 36 seconds behind Vos.
The next stage will start in Altedo and end in Verona. All the riders will cover the distance of 129 kilometres.
