Ina-Yoko Teutenberg wins second stage of Tour of Chongming Island 2011 – Cycling news
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg of the HTC-Highroad team won the second stage of the Tour of Chongming Island on Thursday.
Teutenberg took a total of 3 hours, 1 minute and 2 seconds to cover the distance of 118.4 kilometres.
Emma Johansson of the Hitec Product-UCK team won the first sprint of the race. The HTC-Highroad team took control of the race before the second sprint. All the six HTC riders made breakaway in the race.
With the help of the HTC-high road team, Teutenberg won the second sprint of the race ahead of Emma Johansson and stage one winner Elizabeth Armitstead.
A group of twelve riders made a first breakaway which included Johansson, Sara Mustonen, Giorgia Bronzini, Monia Baccaille, Lauren Tamayo, Andrea Dvorak, Annemiek van Vleuten and Sarah Duster.
Lizzie Armitstead was also in the twelve groups of cyclists, but she scored the points in the second intermediate sprint behind Teutenberg and Johansson.
In the last 15 kilometres, Lizzie’s bicycle was punctured but her teammate Trine Schmidt worked hard to being her back in the race.
In the final sprint, a group of riders gained over a minute and a half over the peloton. Teutenberg again showed his good performance in the stage and took a lead ahead of Annemiek van Vleuten.
Teutenberg teammate Charlotte Becker finished third while Emma Johansson, Monia Baccaille and Giorgia Bronzini were in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.
After winning the stage the 36-year-old Teutenberg said, “The girls did just an amazing job putting the peloton into the gutter with 45km to go. I was protected all the way and super stoked to finish off their hard work.”
Teutenberg also took lead in the overall classification with a timing of 4 hours, 49 minutes and 57 seconds. Annemiek Van Vleuten was in second place 17 seconds behind Teutenberg.
Emma Johansson finished third with a difference of 20 seconds while Lauren Tamayo was in fourth place 26 seconds adrift.
The final stage will start on Friday where all the riders will cover a distance of 79.2 kilometres for victory.
