i know hamsters are nocturnal, but is it normal when it sleeps during the night too???? i just to my female white russian today and its about 3 - 4 months old.

i woke it up during the day a lot cuz i was trying to tame it, so is it just tired from the day and is trying to make up her sleep during the night??

it was kind of active in its exercise ball, but it wasnt running around crazly like my pervious hamster did. it was also on the wheel runing a bit, but not that active.

it's eating and drinking normally, which is a good thing? :)

it doesn't seem to like my tissue bedding cuz its sleeping in a corner with no tissues.

her eyes are bright and she seems healthy.

its 12 30 AM, and its sleeping still.

but anyways back to my point.. why is it sleeping this much????

  1. Probably due to bordem. Does she have an exerise wheel in her cage? If not, that should get her going. But if not, my hamsters will sometimes sleep through the night. Thats just what they do. You can also try putting mineral chews in her cage along with some other toys and treats. =)

  2. How cold do you keep the room where you keep her? Because if it's below 75 degrees F, she may be hibernating. Hamsters will do that if it gets too cold - I know, it's odd, but hey, they are a lot like tiny bears, heheh.

Also, dwarves are known for getting diabetes. This causes them to sleep a LOT, drink a LOT, and to pee a LOT. So do some research on dwarfine diabetes, at sites such as this: http://www.hamsterific.com/HamsterUniver...

Make sure that if you do find that your hamster is diabetic, you take good care of her. I had two boys who ended up dying mysteriously because I hadn't known they were diabetic till it was too late.

Definitely a MAJOR downside to dwarves. =/

SO yeah, she could be either hibernating, diabetic, or just different. My mom has a hamster who wakes up in the afternoons. *shrug* Your hamster may just be lazy.

Good luck; I hope she doesn't end up being diabetic, but if she is, I'm sure you'll take GREAT care of her.

  3. see may be bored she may be tired or she may be pregnant but i doubt that because their gestation period is 14-16 days

  4. All hamsters a unique like humans

    just remember that.

  5. Each hamster has a different personality. Some hamsters are active for few hours during the day time and some hamsters are active only in the night or early hours of the morning.

Some hamsters are too shy to come out of their cages when there is activity in the house. They only come out their nests when the house is dark and quiet. Hence many people think that their hamsters are only sleeping all the time, when actually the hamsters are active when the people are sleeping!

Also if your hamster is new to your house, she would definitely be inactive for the first few days until she gets used to her new surroundings.

The best way to find this out is to switch off all the lights and keep the home quiet. Wait near the cage for half an hour after the lights are out and you can definitely see your hamster coming out to play and eat.

If you think that she is still lethargic and if there are other signs of sickness like not eating properly, not drinking enough water, not peeing and pooping properly, fur does not look healthy etc., then it is better to take her to a vet for opinion.

If everything looks fine, then don't worry, She is just going through an adjustment phase. If you want to make her active, put her in her hamster ball for 20 minutes every evening or play with her in a hamster proof area of your house so that she gets the necesscary exercise and will also start feeling more active.

You have mentioned that you play with her during daytime. It is possible that it is upsetting her sleeping clock since she is playing when she should be sleeping, hence she is sleeping at night when she should be awake. Try shifting your playtime to the evening after 7pm and see if that makes your hamster more active.
