Inbee Park grabs Sime Darby title thanks to flurry of birdies
South Korean Inbee Park displayed a stellar performance in the last round of Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012, shooting a 67 to grab a two-stroke victory against defending champion Na Yeon Choi.
Park might have faced a little difficulty gaining her position in the first two rounds, but she fully capitalised on the favourable course and weather conditions on the last two days, registering a 65 and 67 respectively, which brought her total score to a 269.
On the other hand, Choi, who was confident to do her best this year too, could not maintain the momentum in the last round — although she managed to score well in the first two rounds as she carded a 65 and 67 respectively.
Park started the fourth round at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club on Sunday with an aim to improve her position as Choi was one stroke clear of her at the end of the third round. But the round saw Park display a decent game on almost all the holes, thanks to a string of birdies.
Overall, Park shot six birdies in the round, but she also faltered on the last two holes, carding bogeys.
The 24-year-old golfer, who won the Evian Masters 2012 in July, impressed the Malaysian spectators after she reeled off two straight birdies on the second and third hole. She then parred the remaining holes on the front nine.
On the back nine, her performance was even better but it did not come without price as she misjudged the ball on the greens of 17th and 18th hole, posting bogeys.
She shot consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th and 13th and 14th to cement her position on the last day of LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the hectic day, the LPGA titan said that she is thrilled about grabbing the second title of the 2012 season, and this victory will surely help her shine at the coming tournaments.
“Very happy to win.  Play for the second time, that was the first time I’ve won twice in one year so I'm really proud of myself for that. I was really nervous out there,” the Sime Darby winner said. “I wasn't nervous till about 15, then it just got to me.  Was really nervous. Na Yeon played good golf today.  It was a little bit embarrassing finish, bogey, bogey finish”.
