Why does inbreeding cause defects?

  1. Because recessive deleterious genes which are are not expressed in the heterozygous individual may be expressed in the inbred individual by becoming homozygous.

    EG. Individual 1 AaBbCc and indiviual 2 AaBbCc could produce an inbred individual aabbcc which would express the recessive alleles.
