Question:

Incense smells like campfire?

Why? It's supposed to smell like chocolate.

I have some that are for aroma-therapy and they smell like that, but they still smell a little like camp-fire. Gives me a headache.

What am I doing wrong?

I use a lighter to light them, wait 10 seconds and blow the flame out. Then it stays on but it keeps smelling like smoke.

  1. Maybe you should open a window when using it.

  2. The only thing you're doing wrong is buying low quality incense. Good quality incense burns quite pure and the smoke really only smells of the scent. Cheap incense (regardless of what you may have actually paid for it) has many fillers and very little essence. Never, ever buy those ones with the sleazy names and smutty pictures that you find at smoke shops and dollar stores. They are purely nasty. It is also true that the simpler, more nature based scents, such as sandalwood, cedar, lavender, pine, jasmine etc., are more reliable than the ones like piña colada, or banana split.

Morning Star is a nice brand that isn't too expensive but still does what it should. It comes with a cute little tile for a burner too. Anyway, shop around, it isn't you, it's your incense.

Keep in mind that you might just be extremely sensitive to smoke, as well. If that proves to be the case you might be happier with the essential oils that come with bamboo wicking wands. You get scent with no smoke at all. They're pretty spendy though.
