Inclusion in Washington Nationals became an early Christmas gift for Denard Span-MLB Update
Being included on the roster of the Washington Nationals was an early Christmas present for outfielder, Denard Span.
While talking about the event, he has acknowledged that coming to the Nationals was one of the special moments of his life.
Span was traded to the Nationals earlier by the Minnesota Twins, in a move that reflected the need of the former to fill their spot in the centre field.
For the Nationals, using Bryce Harper for the centre field excessively can result in an early decline in his effectiveness.
To alleviate burden, they have decided to shift him elsewhere in the outfield and replace Harper with Span in the centre.
Span is extremely excited to join the Nationals.
Though he was disappointed when announcement of his trade came, he is thoroughly pleased at the moment.
To get an opportunity to play for the World Series contender such as the Nationals is amazing for him.
He is so ecstatic that he spontaneously nodded when his interviewer likened his incorporation in the Nationals to a prized Christmas gift.
Below is what he said after being questioned about his inclusion on the Nationals’ roster.
“Yes, it was. At first, when it happened, I was sad that I was leaving Minnesota. I've been there for so long. Once I got over that and realized where I was going and what type of team I was going to, I instantly got excited, and the trade lit a fire underneath
me. I worked a little harder this offseason. I'm going to a new team that already won the division last year. I'm going to try to make a good first impression and help them go further in the postseason,” Span replied.
The Nationals will be hoping that Span lives up to the requirements of the team in the upcoming season.
In case the Nationals fail to sign contract extension with Adam LaRoche, his significance for the club will increase immensely.
For example, then he will be looked upon to prove to be a reliable offensive replacement of LaRoche.
It will be interesting to see how Span takes the challenge and spearheads offence of the team in 2013.
