Increasing Swim Time?

Right now it takes me alittle less than 30 mins to swim 750 meters at the YMCA Pool.

For thoes of you that dont know thats 10 laps, couting 1 lap as starting in the deep end swimming to the shallow end then swimming back.

Im going into the Navy and Im curious as to what are some ways I can increase my swim time.

I'm not going ot judge you but I swim I 500 in 8 minuets when I'm doing a DPS the whole way!!  that's 20  laps in a 25 yds pool.  My meters times aren't much slower  just about 6-30 seconds slowwer.  Depends on the lengths.  But I guess that's still pretty good.  I'd suggest doing that as a warm-up and then ding some kick sets like 10 200's kick w/ a kickboard with the timelimit bing like 3:20 or 3:30 that's inminuets and seconds too!  and then doing some pulling sets like 4 100's pull on 1:30 or 1:45.  Then maybe a pull set of a 300.  Then do smoe dsp 25's.  DPS means distance per stroke.  When you do that stretch it out and reach!!  You should get some where between 13-16 on those!  Also just doing a lot of laps and working them hard will make you get faster.  Really to get faster if your stroke technique is good then you just ne d strength, conditioning and endurance.  That will get it to be much faster!!  Good luck!  Oh! and always remember to have at least a 100 cool down!  It's good for you're muscles and take a warm shower right after for the first few times to relax your muscles.  If you want to can also supliment your hard work with some dryland stuff like CRUNCHES, lifting weights, push-ups, ect.  That will help a lot too!!  Also running a little will help too!!


  2. fyi, a 500m is 10 laps... so down and back is 50 meters.

    conditioning is extremely important for improving your time. challenge yourself. use the navy as a motivation.

    technique drills will definitely help. they won't exactly help your stamina much when doing them, but once you improve your technique, your swimming can become smoother, therefore faster. practice drills regularly.

    if you don't know any drills, you can just go to google and type in "freestyle drills".

    also, if you have access to them, pool buoys and kickboards are great for your technique.

  3. You mean decreasing right? Because increasing would mean going slower. Not to be rude, but that is a bit slow, my 1500m time is 23:06 and I'm about the slowest in my team.

    A few tips concerning long distance swimming (I'm a long distance swimmer):

    1. Make sure that you don't stop kicking. Usually I tend to sort of forget to kick, I don't know if that happens with you but I just thought I'd mention it.

    2. Make sure you make nice long pulls, always reach really far and flex your wrist.

    3. ALWAYS tumble turn. I don't know if you do it, but sometimes in the 1500m when I get tired, I sort of give up and I forget to tumble turn. Make sure you don't do that.

    4. Descend, for the 750m I would suggest, doing this:

    the first 7 laps go medium-fast, your 8th and 9th laps make it fast and the last lap, sprint it. You don't want to sprint the first few laps as you'll run out of energy. You've gotta swim smart.
