Question:

Increasing Vitamin A in a turtle

Ok so my turtle has a funny eye, I looked it up and it's a deficiency in vitamin a but what I want to know is should I take him out of the tank and put him in water or not water when I try to increase his vitamin a? Also foods that increase vitamin a are spinach, carrot tossed with cod liver oil. Should I buy just a regular cod liver oil or should I actually go to a pet store and see if they have any? And also (as stupid as this sounds) should I cook the spinach and carrot a little so that it is pretty easy for him to eat? He's not exactly a big turtle, about the size of your palm. Help would really be appreciated

  1. My first question to you is if it is land or aquatic turtle. Care for the eye does differ for the different types of turtle. Never cook the food you are going to give the turtle because you lose all the beneficial vitamins. The cod liver you use should be in gel cap form that is usually the pure cod liver oil.Puncture a hole in the pill and apply directly to the eye about two times a day. I recommend you check out turtleforum.com, you will find all kinds of info and a place to post more questions if you ever need to.

  2. Take him to the vet. If there is something wrong with his eye they will probaly give food with meds.

  3. aquatic or land?

Aquatic you shopuld be feeding leafy greens romaine spinach, butter lettuce and fish! Feeder guppies, minows, goldfish!  If your not there is where the problem lies. Tour tank must be clean. and at least 20 gallons plus tank this is a must or your turtle will be sickly all the time. Temp of the water must be close to 78..never bwlow 75.  Basking at least 8 to 10 hrs a day. All these things above are a must!!

Do all these things and he will be fine in a month or less...unless he is to sickly now  and then Contact the “herpetologicalsocieties.com, for a turtle vet in your city and state.

Sliders, Cooters , painted ,map and yellow bellied are require the same care and feeding. I have two that are 36 yrs old!! Plus an 8 and 5 yr old.

I have had them in a 150gal pond for about 6 yrs now..
