Increasing amps?

I was wondering if it is possible to take a 12volt dc system and increase the amps output. say I was drawing about 20 amps on something and I what to make it 40 or 60 amps output. I'm new to all of this electronics so I hope that this don't sound to stupid. basically I need a small device so I can get as my amps out of my 12 volt system as I can without straining my alternator.

Thanks

  1. You can do it with an inverter. Go to radio shack. They have what you need.

  2. As you are mentioning alternator in your question, I take it that you are trying to connect some thing to a car electrical system, I would advise you to take a look at the spec sheet for your car particularly the alternator data as modern devices are capable of quite high current outputs, you may find that your system is capable of delivering the current you need, just make sure that any cabling is of the right gauge for the load(amps) as undersized cabling is pretty quick way to start a fire.
