Increasing climate variability and frequency of extreme events?

I am currently reading a paper on the effects of global warming on the praries of Alberta, and it mentions "increases in climate variability and frequency of extreme events". This paper doesn't go into why this happens, but rather the effects that this will have if it does happen. Anyway, I have heard about this before but never seen any of the evidence for why people seem to think this will happen. If anyone could exlplain, and show evidence for why these things may occur that would be great, because sometimes it seems really contradictory. For example, another part of this paper says, "Projections of future climate include more frequent drought, but also increased precipitation in the form of rain and higher probability of severe flooding". That just seems very odd to me.

What do you think is the reason that weather records are being broken more often lately? We hear more and more about weather events being worse than ever recorded.

The ever widening parameters of weather records is one of the signs of rapid climate change.

Two years ago here in the Pac. NW, we got a severe storm and flooding. The climatologists called it a "100 Year Storm". This year we got hit by a monster storm that was called a"1,000 Year Storm"!

How big of a storm will come next time? The extreme flooding in the Mid-West is a result of just one rain storm!  When the snow melt begins,the flooding will get much worse! The jet stream has changed its flow over N. America.  That has changed the way storms develop and move across the country. Heat drives the weather. It's the transfer of heat from the Equator towards the Poles that is what we see as "weather". As the heat is transferred,it interacts with the evaporation from the oceans. The warmer air can hold more water vapor,which either falls as rain,or snow. The increased  water vapor,combined with dramatic swings in temperature cause enormous and powerful storms. Think of it like putting the "pedal to metal". The more heat in the atmosphere,the faster it goes! That's why we are seeing severe floods and drought at the same time in the US. Freak weather will become the 'norm'!  That leads to crop failures and food shortages.  We only have this one tiny wet rock,spinning through space! Let's not s***w it up!

This (unlike the fact that global warming is mostly man made) is difficult and controversial science, something which definitely needs more work.  The fundamental idea is that heat is the engine which drives weather systems.  More heat=stronger systems.

But the floods/drought thing is simple.  Clearly global warming will move precipitation around, causing more here and less there.  You could get lucky and have that be positive.

But more likely it will rain more in places that don't need more, and cause floods, or less in places that don't have enough and cause droughts.  Africa seems to be in great danger of the latter.

The statement that "this is a scam" simply isn't credible.  The National Academy of Sciences, 1800 of the best scientists, few of who get funding for global warming, doesn't scam people.  They're the closest thing we've got to a Supreme Court of science.

Variability just means that the climate will be warm sometimes, and cold other times.  In other words, the climate will be normal.

Face it, the climate isn't warming like the believers thought it would, as the climate is now cooling back down to an average temperature.

Repackaging the idea, re-marketing the concept of "global warming" is needed to keep you believing that you are causing harm to the Earth.

It's a scam.  Don't buy into it.

[Edit] - Bob's National Academy of Science is also researching the link between intelligence, violence, and the color of a persons skin.  While some will say that they have the courage to be above political correctness, I'll call them as the racist that they are.  No one will find a link between skin color and intelligence because there isn't any.  Just like these isn't any link between co2 and global temperatures.

it means the people who wrote it are getting paid by the number of words they write.

writing "the weather will continue to be changeable as usual" doesn't pay very well.
