  1. If your looking to develop speed and have weights, use light weights with high reps and do your set as fast as possible. This will help you exericse your fast twitch muscle fibers.

graeme patrick is right about the wrist/ankle weights (2 1/2 lb. are good.) using these will help increase your speed. For instance, throwing 30-40 left jabs, then 30-40 right crosses etc., etc. all as fast as possible.

However, I would NOT recommend doing this when shadow boxing. When shadow boxing you tend to "follow thru" with your punches and kicks, and the added weight will hyper extend your joints, putting undue stress on them. So when using wrist/ankle weights, make sure your hitting something. A heavy bag. Try finding a cheap one somewhere. Or a used but decent duffle bag from a army/navy surplus store. And then just fill it. ALWAYS keep in mind when using the wrist/ankle weights and going full-bore on the bag is to maintain good form. The added weight and speed of this exercise will tire you faster and you may find yourself throwing sloppy punches and/or kicks and developing bad habits. So always keep it fore-front in your head to continue throwing with the proper techinque and form.

  2. shadow box with some weights in your hands.. its amazing how much faster youll get.. start out with 5lb per hand then start using 10lbs when they get too light.. work on throwing combinations this way every day and youll notice the difference pretty quickly...

also work on throwing for example 30 jabs then 30 crosses then 30 hooks then 30 uppercuts with each arm.. it doesnt hurt to alternate.
