Independant eleven year old how to stay busy and occupied?

My eleven year old boy has to keep occupied and i get busy. any sugestions?

  1. Give him a schedule to follow. Let him do some chores, spend some time doing school work, reading, helping you make meals, etc. You can make it interesting by allow him to 'manage' his day in a series of scheduled events. You can format a schedule similar to the ones the TV nannies introduce to parents (with cut out shapes that can be removed and re-applied as responsibilities change).  


  2. You can buy him some books by Hardy Boys, educational computer games, crossword puzzles, go outside and ride his bike, see if your city has a newspaper route he could ride, etc.

  3. It depends where his interests lay.  Is he into reading?  Give him some books or maybe some music to listen to.  Get him to take up an instrument - maybe guitar or something?  I'd vote against letting him have a computer system because he could get addicted easily.
