(from an IRISH/American in the US) :

We are celebrating Independence Day today, July 4th, in memory of the original declaration of independence from britain (a pox on their house!) -- does Ireland celebrate independence on a particular day? Easter Monday? another date representing the Anglo/Irosh War?

  1. No we don't.  There has been a small celebration in dublin for the last few easters but our national holiday is St Patricks Day.

Before Britain invaded, Ireland was independant so its completely different to USA.

  2. St patricks day is a national holiday and a kind of independance day.

Since the founding of the state there was none as the whole island is not indepentant. Also the IRA and the shinners would  hijack it as a political thing much like they have with easter monday and the rising.

St patricks day is a day of celebration for all sides

  3. yeah, paddy's day is our national  holiday, but every easter there is a big celebration in Dublin's O'Connell street , outside the G.P.O ( the general post office where the easter rising took place) and it's organised by sinn fein ( the political party, which is associated with the I.R.A)

so even if the whole country doesn't celebrate it, the sinn fein heads always do...so you were right by saying easter , but it is actually easter sunday and not monday

  4. Not particularly..the only day that the Irish really celebrate, apart from Christmas, Easter and things like that, is St Patrick's Day on March 17.

  5. Ireland doesn't have an independance day mainly because the english invaded and occupied for a few centuries a previously existing country.

It would be Liberation day if anything.

The only day that is celebrated by all, a national holiday, with festivals, parades etc is St Patrick's Day on March 17th.
