  1. In the political sense, an Independent is generally the term used to describe a candidate who is not affiliated with any political party. The word has evolved to some degree and can also be used to describe a candidate who is not a member of a country’s main political parties. In the United States, if one is not a Republican or a Democrat, one might be referred to as an Independent or a third party candidate.

  2. An independent votes or opines on the merits of a particular issue or case, rather than casting one's opinion or vote based on an affiliation with a party who's platform changes and evolves depending on the candidate or candidates prevalent at a given time....A John F. Kennedy supporter would most likely not find the Dennis Kucinich's of the world a 'political brother in arms'.  Likewise, Barry Goldwater's brand of Republican is a far cry from another Arizonian, John McCain.

INDEPENDENT, means the vote or opinion is NOT DEPENDENT on any person, place or thing.

  3. A patriotic politician that knows the parties are corrupt to the core.
