India, what's the deal with the constant horn honking?

I thought India was fascinating and very hospitable but I could not get used to the constant horn honking, it's noise pollution! In the middle of Kolkata it's impossible to tell which car is honking, because they're coming from every direction! Drivers can use mirrors to see where drivers and pedestrians are can't they? It's such a nice quiet stressless concept.

I dont mean to be euro-centric, and I know the Indians lead a totally different life for many reasons such as the population density, but I just dont see the need for constant honking, I wanted to snap my fingers and make every horn malfunction.
