India Open 2012: Peng Soon, Liu Ying open their marathon with first round win
Mixed Doubles campaigners Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia had a perfect start in Yonex Sunrise India Open as they outclassed their rivals Yoo Yeon Seong-Jang Ye Na in first round match on April 25, 2012.
The duo, which is also ranked at number four in the tournament, dominated in 61-minute fight and reserved a spot in second round by registering an impressive total of 21-19, 13-21 and 22-20.
They will now lock horns with Japanese pair Noriyasu Hirata-Miyuki Maeda to ensure their presence in quarter-finals of the event.
In their opening match, they proved themselves tactically and technically superior to their lower ranked rivals and boosted their confidence to perform beyond expectations in New Delhi.
World Number seven couple Peng Soon-Liu Ying dazzled the Korean pair with a lustrous performance in first set of the match.
In the beginning, they were at the lower end with a 5-9 score but they managed to be in the commanding position with some uninterrupted rallies and put a decent margin of 11-10 before half-time.
After interval, both teams played superior badminton and remained close to each other until game point situation but Peng Soon-Liu Ying ended opening game with favourable result of 21-19.
However, lower ranked duo of Yoo Yeon-Jang Ye registered their mark in following game as they bounced back with a staggering performance.
The backlash was so strong that the Malaysian defence could not last for long and collapsed after resisting for some time.
World Number 19 couple established an unassailable lead straight away in first half of the set and placed a decent margin of 11-6 until mid-game break.
Later part of second set also belonged to Korean duo as it added six consecutive points in its total to reach at 19-10.
This six-point deficit was final blow for their opponents as they could not come out of this loss and knelt down after reading 21-13 score on the board.
The decider turned consequential as both teams were looking to avoid a first round exit. They did not allow each other to strike the right balance until game point situation.
However, the Malaysians remained successful to put decisive total of 22-20 and got a permit to continue their race in India Open.
