India Open GP Gold: Wong Wing Ki overpowers Chong Wei Feng to reach in Men’s Singles quarter-final
Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki has penetrated into Men’s Singles quarter-final after beating Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng in the round-of-16 at the 2011 India Open GP Gold, on Thursday, December 22, in Lucknow, India.
The World Number 22 Wing Ki, who is the fifth seed in the Men’s Singles draw of India Open, had to play to his maximum potential to get rid of the in-form Wei Feng. The Hong Kong shuttler took 50 minutes to beat the Malaysian in this thrilling three-set
battle.
Wei Feng played remarkable badminton in the opening set and bagged it with a stunning score. However, Wing Ki fought back in the second game and won it to level the match. In the third set, the Hong Kong shuttler crushed the Malaysian with an impressive
score and won the fight.
In the opening set, Wei Feng was the one who took a comfortable lead in the first half and reached at 11-7 until the break. He dictated the pace of rallies and moved his rival in all corners of the court. His impressive play spared no room for his higher
ranked opponent to make a comeback in the game.
Wing Ki tried to level the score but failed as his Malaysian challenger was not making any mistake. He lost the opening set with a stunning score of 12-21.
Wei Feng played positive badminton in the opening points of the second game and reached at 9-6. Wing Ki started to elevate his play and levelled the score by executing fabulous smashes.
Both shuttlers progressed closely until the score reached at 17-17. At this crucial stage, the Hong Kong shuttler played with precision and scored four points in a row to win the set with a margin of 21-17.
In the deciding set, Wing Ki hammered his challenger by playing fast and positive badminton. He executed all strokes in the perfect areas and maintained pressure on the Malaysian in the whole game. He easily took the final game with a striking margin of
21-12. The overall score of this superb contest was 12-21, 21-17 and 21-12.
In the quarter-final, Wing Ki will take on India’s Sameer Verma who defeated his team-mate Rohit Yadav C. in the pre-quarter-final showdown.
