India Open: Lee Chong Wei defeats spirited Ajay Jayaram in Men’s Singles pre-quarter-final contest
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei had to dig into his reserves to defeat India’s spirited shuttler Ajay Jayaram at the Men’s Singles pre-quarter-final contest at the India Open Super Series 2012 on Thursday, April 26, at New Delhi, India.
The World Number 1 Chong Wei, who is also top seeded shuttler in Men’s Singles main draw of the championship, worked really hard to overpower Jayaram who put up remarkable show of impressive badminton.
Chong Wei, who is defending champion in this tournament, played well in the opening game but lost the second set.
However, he found his rhythm and won the deciding game with a huge margin.
On the other hand, Jayaram played with extreme aggression as he took the bird early from all areas of the court and troubled his rival.
He took the second game from the World Number One but failed to play well in the ending set and lost the match in three games by playing top quality badminton for 47 minutes.
Chong Wei started the first game while remaining calm in the court. He was a bit slow in the court which helped Jayaram to take a reasonable lead of 11-9 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Jayaram continued playing remarkable badminton and reached at 15-10 when Chong Wei geared up his speed and reduced the deficit by reaching at 14-16.
At this stage, Jayaram lost his control which helped Chong Wei to take seven consecutive points and he ended the game with a 21-16 score on the board.
In the second game, Jayaram again played well in the opening half and managed to take lead over Chong Wei by reaching at 11-7 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Chong Wei tried to dominate the pace but his local opponent was playing at his best speed. The Malaysian lost the set with a comfortable margin of 15-21.
In the ending set, Chong Wei became aggressive as he took over the control from opening rallies and set up a huge gap of 11-3 until the break.
After the interval, Chong Wei continued his killing run in the court and took the final set with a one-sided 21-5 margin on the score board.
The top seeded Malaysian wrapped up victory after working hard for three sets with a margin of 21-16, 15-21 and 21-5.
