India Open Super Series: Boonsak Ponsana stuns Lee Hyun Il in Men’s Singles first round
Thailand’s ace shuttler Boonsak Ponsana delivered a spectacular performance when he stunned Korea’s Lee Hyun Il in Men’s Singles first round at the India Open Super Series 2012 at New Delhi, India, on Wednesday, April 25.
Ponsana, who has been placed at number 30 in Men’s Singles world placements, put up remarkable show and thrashed the World Number 7 Lee Hyun, who was fifth seed in the tournament.
The un-seeded Thai player was in prime form while playing against his higher ranked Korean opponent and won the encounter in rubber games by taking 57 minutes in the court.
On the other hand, Lee Hyun could not dominate the game against Ponsana and crashed out in the opening round of the championship.
In the first set, Ponsana found a perfect start when he played with impressive precision and took five consecutive points to set up an early lead of 5-0.
He remained in complete control and was in dominating position on the board until the one-minute break.
After the interval, the Thai shuttler continued his gutsy performance and reached at 17-15. At this stage, he became a little relaxed and threw away six points in a row and lost the set with a 17-21 score on the board.
In the second set, both players showed their remarkable craft by playing fast and composed game. They remained close and no one could dominate the pace of rallies until the break.
After the interval, Lee Hyun was ahead at 14-12 when Ponsana stunned everyone by playing attacking badminton.
He thrashed his rival in a spectacular fashion and scored 9 consecutive points to win the set with a superb score of 21-14.
In the deciding set, both men played with precision in starting points and reached at 4-4 when Ponsana controlled the driving seat and established an 11-6 gap until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Ponsana did not show any respect to Lee Hyun in the court and continued his incredible progress.
The Thai player was impressive in his shot selection and ended the set with a 21-13 margin on the board.
Ponsana emerged as victorious against Lee Hyun in a thrilling rubber-set encounter with a sensational score of 17-21, 21-14 and 21-13.
