India Open Super Series: Hans Kristian Vittinghus upsets Simon Santoso in Men’s Singles first round
Denmark’s talented player Hans Kristian Vittinghus created an upset in the Men’s Singles first round when he outplayed the higher ranked Simon Santoso of Indonesia at India Open Super Series 2012 on Wednesday, April 25, at New Delhi, India.
The World Number 15 Vittinghus, who is un-seeded in the tournament, showed his elevated craft and thrashed the sixth seed Santoso, who has been positioned at number 9 in the world standings.
Vittinghus showed his aggressive approach while playing against the Indonesian and bagged the contest in straight games with a comprehensive margin.
On the other hand, Santoso could not handle the attacking play of his lower ranked Danish rival and lost the fight without putting up a strong impact.
In the opening set, Vittinghus did not take much time in building a small lead in the starting points by playing positive badminton.
The Danish was impressive in the court and maintained a reasonable lead until the one-minute break when he was ahead on the board by reaching at 11-7.
After the interval, Santoso tried to change his tactics but failed to overpower his opponent who was quicker in taking the bird.
Vittinghus remained positive in the whole set and did not face any trouble at any stage in the opening game and eventually bagged it quite easily with a tremendous difference of 21-15.
In the second game, Santoso changed his game plan and denied an early lead to his spirited opponent until the score reached at 10-10.
However, Vittinghus was slightly ahead at 11-10 until the mid-game interval in the second set.
After the break, the lower ranked Danish shuttler injected more power into his smashes and disturbed the flow of his Indonesian opponent.
Santoso, who was the favourite to win against Vittinghus, could not play his normal game as he received an unexpected treatment from his Danish challenger in the court.
Vittinghus remained ahead on the board in the entire concluding half of second game and won it with a remarkable 21-15 score on the board.
The un-seeded Vittinghus emerged as the winner against Santoso in this opening-round encounter with a spectacular score of 21-15 and 21-15.
