India Open Super Series: Sameer Verma topples Ivan Sozonov in Men’s Singles qualifying round
India’s upcoming young player Sameer Verma showed an amazing performance as he toppled Russia’s Ivan Sozonov in Men’s Singles qualifying round at the India Open Super Series 2012 on Tuesday, April 24, in India.
The spirited Indian showed his elevated skills against the Russian and managed to thrash his Russian opponent without losing any game.
Sameer was in complete control throughout the match and he did not show mercy to Sozonov in the entire contest and ended it in just 22 minutes.
On the other hand, Sozonov was in all sorts of trouble while playing against his young Indian challenger and bowed down to him without showing any resistance.
Sameer was in wonderful control from the initial stage of first game as he remained in commanding position and remained ahead of his opponent in the opening half.
After the break, Sameer continued his wonderful play and dictated his Russian rival in all areas of the court.
In the meanwhile, Sozonov tried to employ his aggressive shots but failed to destroy the defence of spirited Indian who was quicker in taking the bird from all areas of the court.
Sameer put up a gutsy performance in the opening set and ended the set with a 21-16 margin on the board.
In the second set, Sameer stunned his opponent by playing on a completely different level. He tamed Sozonov by playing flawless game and executed his shots in the right areas without slowing down the pace of rallies.
Until the mid-game interval, Sameer was sailing smoothly and set up a tremendous lead on the score board.
After the break, Sozonov became quicker at net but his opponent was also playing at his best speed.
Sameer played superb badminton by keeping the tempo of rallies quite fast. He did not miss any chance to push his Russian opponent on his back foot.
The Indian continued cheering his home fans by playing superb badminton and ended the set with a one-sided 21-9 score on the board.
Sameer won this Men’s Singles qualifying round fight in straight games by a margin of 21-16 and 21-9.
