An effective all-round performance by the India Under-19s enabled them to qualify for the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012 final, after clinching a narrow 9-run win over the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Under-19s in the 2nd semi-final of the ongoing tournament, played
at the Tony http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 Stadium in Townsville today on August 23.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first, with Prashant Chopra (52) and skipper Unmukt Chand (31) opening for their side. Their partnership lasted 51 runs, after which Chand was sent packing by Connor Neynens in the 14th over.
Baba Aparajith, who won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performance, was up next, and contributed 44 runs to the total, in addition to setting up an 81-run stand with Chopra. The two got their side up to 132 by the 34th over, after
which http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Nuttall dismissed Chopra, with Aparajith following soon after at the hands of Ish Sodhi in the 36th over.
The remainder of the batting performances were lacklustre, with 3 batsmen – Vijay Zol, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ravikant-c84210 Singh – dismissed on duck. Ben Horne (6-0-28-3) and Matthew Quinn (10-1-36-2) both made valiant attempts, but the India U-19s eventually managed
to post a total of 209 on the board.
The 210-run chase did not appear too daunting for the Kiwis, but the India U-19 bowlers launched an intense attack, with not a single bowler going wicket-less, and the New Zealand U-19s were restricted to 200 by the end of 50 overs.
Stand-out batting performances included http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harmeet-Singh-c1533
(10-2-30-2), Ravikant Singh (10-0-49-2), and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sandeep-Sharma-c88505 (10-2-36-2) all claimed two wickets each, while Kamal Passi (10-0-48-1) and Aparajith (10-1-29-1) both picked up one each.
Managing an effective show of run restriction, the India Under-19s eventually managed to cut their opponents off at 200, at the expense of 9 wickets – 9 runs away from the target.
The victory sees the India Under-19s securing a spot for themselves in the tournament final, due to be played against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 Under-19s at the same venue on August 26.
