India and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 handed fine for slow over rate – Cricket News Update
Skipper MS Dhoni, and the Indian team, have been handed fines for having maintained a slow over-rate during the first ODI of their 5-match series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, which culminated in a 21-run win for the visitors at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International
Cricket Stadium in Sooriyawewa, Hambantota on July 21.
Dhoni has been issued a fine for 20% of his match fee, while the remainder of the team have been fined 10%. The team were ruled to be one over short when time allowances were calculated, and the fines were issued following a full disciplinary hearing with
match-referee Chris Broad.
The fine marks Dhoni’s third over-rate breach of the year. He was earlier suspended in January this year from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in Adelaide, owing to the team’s slow over-rate during the previous Test, played in Perth.
He was suspended, yet again, in the very next month, from an ODI during the Commonwealth Bank series Down Under this February, when the team was found to be two overs short during a game against Australia.
The skipper was also issued a hefty 60% fine last year in July (again by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 in Bridgetown.
However, fines aside, the ODI victory against Sri Lanka enabled the Indian team to gain a 1-0 lead over their hosts. Their decision to bat first after winning the toss was justified by the fiery young http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737 (who went on to score an impressive 106)
and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 (96), both of whom joined forces to establish a colossal 173-run stand.
Their partnership established the foundation for India’s mammoth 314-run total, which their bowlers went on to effectively defend. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Z-Khan-c98379 took one each. Sri
Lanka were cut off at 293 by the end of 50 overs, despite a century by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779 (133).
The second ODI of the series is due to be played at the same venue, on July 24.
