India announce squad for Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup – Cricket News Update
The India Women’s squad for the upcoming Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup 2012/13 has been announced, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mithali-Raj-c76407 set to continue her role as captain for the tournament which will take place in Guangzhou, China, later this month.
Harmanpreet Kaur continues as vice-captain of the team, and the only new addition to the squad is that of wicketkeeper batter Sunitha Anand. The remainder of the squad features familiar names, all of whom played a part in the team’s recent ICC Women’s World
Twenty20 campaign in Sri Lanka.
The upcoming tournament sees the India Women coming into the competition with plenty of match practice. The team kicked off 2012 with a tour of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 in February/March this year, during which they played a 5-match T20I series (which their hosts,
the West Indies Women, won 3-2), and a 3-match ODI series (in which the Windies Women were again triumphant, 2-1).
The India Women then went on to host the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 Women for a tour in March, during which the hosts were defeated 0-3 in the ODI series, and 1-4 in the 5-match T20I series which followed. The next assignment was a tour of England, in June/July, which was
preceded by two warm-up T20 matches against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 Women went on to win by a comprehensive margin of 9 wickets.
The actual games against the England Women involved a 2-match T20I series at the end of June (which the hosts won, 2-0), and a 5-match ODI series (which the hosts won again, 3-2). Following a rest period in August, the India Women returned to the cricket
field for the ICC Women's World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka this September/October. However, their campaign was largely unsuccessful, and they failed to win any of their matches, save the last game – the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World Twenty20 2014 Qualifier against the Sri Lanka Women,
which they won by a margin of 9 wickets.
The upcoming Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup, due to be played at the Guanggong International Cricket Stadium (which was also the venue for the Asian Games in 2010), provides the team an ideal opportunity to make up for what has been a largely unsuccessful year.
The India Women have been placed in Group A, alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nepal-c2965.
The competition kicks off on October 24, and two teams from each group will make it to the knockouts, with the tournament final scheduled to be played on October 31.
