India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni claims team was never under pressure in ICC World Cup 2011
India’s World Cup winning captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820 has said that his team never felt any kind of pressure to win the ICC World Cup 2011.
India created history by dismantling http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in the final of the mega event and became the first team ever to have won the most prestigious trophy of the cricketing world on home soil.
The India captain said that there was no burden on the Men in Blue to lift the trophy as the country has already been crowned as the world champions back in 1983. He feels that it was a great achievement by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at that time because they were not rated
as a force in international cricket but now the situation is different.
Dhoni said, “I don't think we felt burdened to win the World Cup since India's last victory in 1983, it was an achievement by our country back then.”
The wicketkeeper was made India’s captain back in 2007 for the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 which they went on to win and Dhoni was made the leader of the Men in Blue in limited overs cricket. He was also made the skipper of the Test team
immediately after the retirement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Anil-Kumble-c44737.
He said that cricket is the most popular sport in Subcontinent and the Indian fans were expecting their country to win the World Cup. Dhoni termed it an opportunity rather than pressure or burden. The wicketkeeper batsman further added that all the players
were in form throughout the tournament and performed up to the mark.
India’s bowling was criticised in the early half of the tournament for the lack of fire-power but Dhoni defended his bowling attack and said that they defended mediocre scores in the tournament against good batting line-ups.
“Cricket is a popular sport here, we were expected to win every game in this event and people knew we were talented. It was an opportunity for us to fulfill. The players were in good nick for the whole tournament and although we struggled on occasion the
bowlers did well and we defended modest totals to win the event,” the Indian captain added.
