Many of the cricket pundits have criticised India’s fielding as their weakest department going into the ICC World Cup 2011 but Jonty Rhodes, one of the finest fielders cricket has seen, feels India’s fielding has improved a lot over the
last couple of years.
“Indian team are a lot better all around the park,” reckoned Rhodes on Thursday. “A couple of years ago, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Mohammad Kaif were top fielders. Now they have got a couple of young players who are putting their
hands up and look sharp in the field.”
Rhodes, who is working as the fielding consultant for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752 said that India’s standard of fielding has considerably improved over the last couple of years and feels the controversial Twenty20 tournament, the Indian Premier League has played
a key role in that.
The 41-year-old hinted that fielding could make the difference in closely contested World Cup matches.
Besides India, the former South Africa batsman picked http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 and Kenya as strong fielding sides in the latest edition of the quadrennial International Cricket Council showpiece tournament.
“I think a team like Australia, regardless of who comes into their side are a good fielding unit,” said the veteran of four World Cups. “As for South Africa…they are pretty good altogether. The Kenyan side are strong and New Zealand have
always been pretty good in the field.”
Jonty however did add that the general standard of fielding of all the teams participating in the World Cup has improved.
When asked to pick the best team from the 14 sides participating in the World Cup, Rhodes said that all the teams have improved their game a lot recently so it was quite difficult to pick one of them as the best.
The former South African batsman, who played 245 One Day Internationals in his 11-year-long cricketing career, played down the talks that the matches in the mega event would be high scoring. He added that the saved runs could prove to be
the difference between the winning side and the losing one.
