Former Indian World Cup winning captain, Kapil Dev has singled out Australian veteran batsmen, Ricky Ponting as the man to pose major threat to his side in the upcoming Test series.
With his career at stake, Punter is most likely to feature in the playing XI for the opening Test match against India on Boxing Day, and while many pundits and former Kangaroo players have called on the veteran to retire from cricket, Kapil feels that he
remains a big danger due to the wealth of experience he possess in the longer version of cricket.
"Ricky Ponting is the most important player. He is an experienced player and if India can control him then we can control http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. Remember experience always comes in handy in the long run. He has scored enough runs against us and is due for a big score,"
said Kapil.
In his illustrious career, the 37-year-old has scored plenty of runs against all top opposition, averaging an impressive 52.30 from a whopping 158 Tests. His stats against the Men In Blue also speaks volume of his stature where he has picked up over 2000
runs at 47.88, which includes his best ever Test score of 257.
However, his form in recent times have been well below his usual standards, where has averaged 36.95 in 2010, while in this calendar year, Punter has scored just 293 runs in 6 five-day games, with a best of 78.
This has considerably dented his charge of helping his team to reclaim their former glory, and with inconsistent performances in recent times, the series against the sub-continent giants has become a must win for the hosts.
Kapil recognizes that the Aussie’s are no more the dominant force in World cricket, which gives his side plenty of opportunity to claim their first series scalp.
"This time India has a better chance to win the Test series in Australia, there is no doubt about that. Australia were on top of the world cricket for 15 years. But now it is not the same team without (Glenn) McGrath, (Shane) Warne, ( Adam) Gilchrist and
(Matthew) Hayden,” added Kapil.
