India should win World Cup for country, not Sachin: Steve Waugh
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has opposed the notion that Indian cricketers should win the World Cup for their colleague, Sachin Tendulkar, who will be appearing in the World Cup possibly for the last time.
Waugh, who led http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 to their second World Cup victory in 1999 said, “They should think of winning the World Cup for the team, most importantly for the country. I don't think it is the right attitude. You cannot think of winning the World Cup for one
player. The game is bigger than any individual. You have to win it for each other. I am sure that even Sachin Tendulkar will like to win it for the team and the country. Yes, if India win the World Cup it will cap off a brilliant career.”
Waugh reckoned that Tendulkar would play an important role in the upcoming World Cup. “Tendulkar may not be the star of the tournament, but he is going to play a crucial role for India. When you need to take control of the game or stop the opposition, he
would play a major part. His inputs will be invaluable.”
Earlier, many Indian players, including Skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820, had said they would like to win the ICC World Cup 2011 as a farewell gift for Sachin Tendulkar. The players reiterated that they would try to play to their best and lift the World Cup
for his sake.
Tendulkar is certain to appear in cricket’s greatest arena for the last time. The little master, who is the highest run scorer both in Test and ODI formats of the game, has never won the World Cup since his international debut in 1989.
The charismatic batsman featured in the World Cup for the first time in 1992 and has been part of the Indian team in every World Cup since. This will be his sixth appearance in cricket’s most cherished tournament.
Most players from his time have already bid farewell to the sport, but he is still a very potent part of the Indian team due to his extreme fitness and even today, is being looked upon at as the player who can guide http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 to their second World Cup victory.
India won the World Cup in 1983 for the first time and have been longing for another World Cup triumph ever since.
This year, however, India have been backed by many as the favourites for the ICC World Cup 2011. The team looks in its best shape and has recently tasted victories against Australia, which has helped boost their confidence. The odds are certainly in favour
of the hosts for this World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by India, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 on 19th February at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh.
