India to feature women golf caddies
Caddies have been around ever since the invention of golf. Women caddies are a rarity on the golf courses around the world. This is about to change in India.
Women caddies will be at hand to assist players in India. These caddies will caddy for international players coming to play in India and Indian players on both national and international tours.
This never-tried-before idea comes under the India Golf Caddy Training Programme, an initiative that has full government support. This program is part of a larger skill development program that is carried out in joint collaboration between various ministries
of Indian government.
The caddie training program falls under ‘Hunar se Rozgar’ – a drive that focuses on training the youth for various trades and technical occupations. The caddie training program initially focuses on underprivileged girls who will receive proper training after
a strict selection process.
The idea is very unique and has never been tried before in the short history of Indian golf. The initiative is a joint collaboration between Ministry of Tourism and Women Golf Association of India. This represents an ideal combination for this type of training.
The Women Golf Association of India will carry out the selection of the candidate caddies and then take over their training. The ministry will handle the introduction and promotion of the idea to the golf world.
Many consider the idea to be good enough to work in real world. All over the world, caddies are subjected to rigorous training that prepares them for the tough life of a tour caddy.
With the rise of women golfers all over the world and in Asia particularly, the presence of women caddies will not raise objections from the purists.
The major objective of the program is twofold. The first and most important aspect is to provide employment opportunities to young women, a suppressed section of the Indian society. The second is to prepare a team of trained caddies that will provide help
and advice to the players who come to play on Indian golf courses.
The idea is unique and in a place like India, it might just work.
