India v Australia – 1st Test – Tea Summary
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in the first Test of the four match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday, December 29, 2011.
The tourists had to chase down 292 runs for victory with more than two days remaining. However, they failed to cope up with the quality seam bowling from the opposition and lost six wickets for just 117 runs until tea on day-4.
India’s openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 failed to give their team a solid start and got out cheaply for 13 and seven respectively.
The latter was the first man to be dismissed. He simply gave his wicket away to a short ball, trying to smash it over point. The extra bounce did the trick for the bowler http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BW-Hilfenhaus-c1204, who was lucky to get a wicket of that ball.
Sehwag went very hard at the ball and lost control of the shot in the end, hitting it straight to the hands of gully fielder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MEK-Hussey-c1942.
Gambhir tried to be cautious, but was unable to make a big impact and got caught in the slips by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PM-Siddle-c2197.
Veteran batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Pattinson-c1653. The ball pitched on the off-stump and went through the defences of ‘The Wall,’ who contributed only 10 runs to the total.
Next to go was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan. This was Pattinson’s second wicket in the day.
Just one run later, middle-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737 was sent back to the pavilion by Hilfenhaus.
There was some reverse swing for the bowler on this occasion and Kohli was all at sea, getting leg before wicket for a duck.
The final Indian wicket to fall before tea was that of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556, who added 32 runs to the total from 46 deliveries. He attempted to drive a fuller delivery from Siddle, but only managed an outside edge which went flying to Hussey at gully.
The Men in Blue were in deep trouble at tea, losing their top six batsmen with skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Ashwin-c2228 battling hard in the middle.
