The visitors won the toss and opted to bat in the first ever Test match to be staged at the venue. The Black Caps made two changes to their team bringing in Tim Southee and Brent Arnel in their team.
The New Zealanders were rocked by the dismissal of opener Brendon McCullum early on, the right hander, who recently gave up the wicket-keeping gloves to concentrate on his batting in Test cricket. He was sent packing by Shiv Sreesanth as he nicked the ball
through to wicket-keeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 on a ball that swung away from the batsman.
McCullum scored only 4 runs in his outing. The Indian opening bowlers bowled a fine opening spell swinging and seaming the ball all over the place.
Sreesanth was making the ball jag all over the place and troubled all three New Zealand batsmen who batted in the opening session of the Test match.
After the dismissal of McCullum, Tim McIntosh and Martin Guptill steadily re-built the innings, the duo was cautious at the start of the innings. They negotiated the early movement being extracted from the pacers and dug in big time to counter the prowess
of the Indian attack.
After the opening bowlers finished their spells, the introduction of spin eased the nerves. However, the Kiwi batsmen got a reprieve when a catch was floored in the slip region.
The two batsmen stayed intact till the lunch interval as they kept their heads in what were trying circumstances.
McIntosh who had a dismal time in the first Test match played at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad was unbeaten on 24. His runs have come off 64 balls and he has struck 3 fours in his innings.
On the other hand the in-form Martin Guptill, who has been hailed as one of the most promising batsmen in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 line-up, has been the more aggressive of the two.
He has scored 36 off 86 balls striking 2 fours and 1 six in his innings thus far. The New Zealanders ended the session at 75/1.
The second session would be crucial for both teams as the Indians would like to make further inroads in New Zealand’s batting line-up.
