India wins bronze at Central Zonal tournament – AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup
The last day of the Central Zonal tournament of the AVC Continental Beach Volleyball Cup recently saw India compete with the Maldives squad.
The tournament was being staged in the Sri Lankan city of Negombo. The match between the two sides took place to decide the third position holder of the championship.
The top three teams of the championships were to earn the honour of qualifying for the final round. The two teams that made a show of their skills for the title of the zonal tournament were Kazakhstan as well as the home team of Sri Lanka.
Despite the fact that the Sri Lankans were playing on their home turf, they could not over power their opponents to win the finals as a result of which they stood runner’s up and Kazakhstan was able to secure the first position.
On the other hand, the team that was able to earn itself the bronze medal stood to be the Indian squad, who also got a ticket into the final round of the tournament. The best pair from the Indian side was the duo of Rajasekar Ragana and C. K. Jeeshma who
were up against the Maldivian team of Azza and Sama. The Indians did not let the match go on to three sets and asserted themselves after making a clean sweep over their opponents. By the time that the Indians started celebrating their well deserved bronze
medal, the score board showed the scores as 21-11 and 21-12.
The first set of the match started off with the Indians taking the lead early on and sticking with the advantage till the end of the set with the Maldives pair following the lead all the way through. The second set followed the same pattern as the first
set and the Indians ended up on the winning end of the game.
The final round of the tournament will give the top teams the chance to enter into the London 2012 Olympic Games that are to be held in the month of July.
The other teams that will be heading towards the next round apart from India, Sri Lanka as well as Kazakhstan will be the qualifying teams from the Eastern, South Eastern, Western and Oceania Zone tournaments.
